An institutional documentary is not a longer promotional video. It is a piece of strategic communication: it tells who the organization is, what it does and why it matters, through real stories, not slogans.

1. Start with the goal, not the images

Before talking about cameras, you need to answer three questions:

  • Who is this documentary for? (donors, partners, communities, general public)
  • What should happen after someone watches it? (fund, join, trust, understand)
  • Where will it live? (annual report, conference, social media, television)

The answers determine the length, the tone, the language and even the delivery formats.

2. The briefing is half the work

A good briefing brings the organization's communication team and the production company together in an honest conversation: the project context, the key people, the constraints on the ground, the cultural and data-protection sensitivities. In projects with NGOs, we define image consents early, especially with minors and vulnerable communities.

3. Find the stories, not the speeches

The temptation is to interview only directors and coordinators. But those who carry the emotion are the people who live the impact of the work: the student, the farmer, the nurse. The role of leadership is to give context; the role of the stories is to make people feel.

4. Production: discretion and truth

On the ground, we work with small crews and discreet equipment. Natural light whenever possible, real ambient sound, zero staging. The best images happen when people forget the camera.

5. Post-production with a clear approval flow

We define upfront how many review rounds there are (usually two), who approves and on what deadlines. This protects the project timeline and avoids endless versions.

6. Multi-format delivery

An 8-minute institutional documentary should also generate: a 60-90 second cut for social media, subtitled versions (PT/EN), and stills for reports. That's how the investment multiplies.
